Like everything about Joe and the show, just not the blues
The beautiful Embassy Theater was easy to get to for performances. I was compelled to see the "Guitar Event of the Year" from his guitar nerd YouTube clips. I arrived 40 minutes into his set, happy to hear his Fort Wayne monologue, as he's a very funny guy and I enjoyed it. I like Disney On Ice: Magic In The Stars a lot. Much better voice than I expected, and of course, just love his guitar nerd banter from this great guitar player. I don't like the blues...at all...much. Was disappointed as nothing but the blues was played; was hoping for some rock n roll classics like I've seen in past YouTube videos. Just enjoyed the whole evening out experience, had a good laugh. If you like the blues, you won't be disappointed.
D2--better than ever
Disney On Ice: Stars Magic may not sell as many records as they used to, but they have never stopped playing live and honing their musical skills by crafting new music just as great, and reworking favorites, and that talent was showcased at the Pacific Amphitheatre in Costa Mesa.
D2 proved once again that they are a truly great band from the moment they stepped onstage until the end of the encore. Simon's voice was possibly better than it was in their 80's heyday, the sets were as tight as Roger's drumming, Nick added lush symphonic strings to his keyboard repertoire, and John, well, what can I say--I'm a bit biased on that point--but his bass and keytar work (wow--haven't seen one of those in ages!) was excellent, and he made an unspoken homage to the recently departed Michael Jackson by playing the bassline to "Billie Jean" during his introduction.
They played for about an hour and 50 minutes which meant that there was no way you were going to hear all of your favorites. In fact, songs from Seven and the Ragged Tiger were completely absent ("The Reflex", "New Moon on Monday", "Union of the Snake", etc.) as were tunes from the less popular albums Liberty, Medazzaland, and Pop Trash. We were treated Arcadia's "Election Day" which has not been heard live since 1985 as a consolation prize. I'd heard rumors that "Late Bar" was now in the setlist, but alas, not at this final US show (unlike many other bands, their setlist can vary wildly between shows).
The audience was comprised of all ages and more equally distributed between the sexes than I ever remember--more proof that they have shed most of their teen idol past and matured into a band that even straight guys can enjoy and respect in public. I say they shed most of their pinup image because although in their late 40s/early 50s, these guys are still pretty hot (and nattily dressed, natch). They had the audience on their feet, happily dancing and singing along to 30 years of infectiously catchy pop songs from the moment they kicked off with "Wild Boys" until they ended with the night version of "Girls on Film".
Loved it
It was great to revisit Disney On Ice: Magic In The Stars. The playlist of old songs was fantastic, a combination of albums. They played 4 new songs, 2 at a time, and they were decent; I may need to check out the album to see if I like it. Most played albums were Core and Purple, which I adore. It was pleasant to listen to music from other albums, including shangraladeeda :) The only downside was their late start, but it was fine as I enjoyed a few more beers before the show. The Midland in KC is a cozy venue that gives the feeling of being on stage. If you're in KC, I highly recommend catching a show there.
